Hair Extensions: Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Them

Hair extensions have become one of my favourite ways to transform a hairstyle without waiting months for natural hair growth. Whether you want longer hair, added volume, or a completely new look, the right hair extensions can make a noticeable difference. However, I always believe that choosing extensions should be based on your hair type, lifestyle, and desired result—not just the trend.

Before getting hair extensions, it is important to understand the different types, application methods, maintenance requirements, and possible impact on your natural hair. In this guide, I’m sharing everything I think you should know before making the decision.

What Are Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions are additional strands of hair attached to your natural hair to create extra length, volume, thickness, or styling flexibility. Depending on your preference, you can choose from temporary or semi-permanent hair extensions.

From my perspective, professional consultation is one of the most important steps because the extension type, colour, length, and application method should complement your natural hair.

Why Do People Choose Hair Extensions?

I find that clients usually choose hair extensions for several reasons:

  • Adding length to short or medium hair
  • Creating fuller-looking hairstyles
  • Adding volume to thin or fine hair
  • Enhancing special-occasion hairstyles
  • Experimenting with different hair colours
  • Creating a quick transformation without permanent colouring

Types of Hair Extensions

One of the first things I recommend considering is the type of hair extension that suits your needs.

Tape-In Hair Extensions

Tape-in extensions are attached using adhesive tapes and are known for their lightweight and natural appearance. They can be a good option for people looking for semi-permanent hair extensions with a relatively discreet finish.

Clip-In Hair Extensions

Clip-in extensions are temporary and can be attached and removed easily. I particularly recommend them for people who want extra length or volume for weddings, parties, photoshoots, or occasional styling.

Keratin Bond Hair Extensions

Keratin bond extensions use small bonds to attach individual strands to the natural hair. They can provide a natural movement and are often chosen for longer-term styling.

Other Hair Extension Methods

Depending on your hair type and desired result, there are also methods such as micro-ring, nano-ring, and weft extensions. A professional stylist can help determine which method is appropriate for your hair.

Human Hair vs Synthetic Hair Extensions

When I discuss hair extensions with clients, one of the most important considerations is whether to choose human hair or synthetic hair.

Human Hair Extensions

Human hair extensions generally provide a more natural appearance and movement. They can usually be styled, washed, and maintained similarly to natural hair, depending on the quality and treatment of the hair.

Synthetic Hair Extensions

Synthetic extensions are often more affordable, but their styling flexibility and appearance can vary. Some synthetic fibres may not tolerate heat styling in the same way as human hair.

For a natural-looking, long-term result, I generally consider high-quality human hair extensions a strong option.
